Student Well being

Restorative Practice

At Fairhills PS, the school values of Persistence, Respect/Tolerance, Responsibility and Confidence is complimented by Restorative Practice. All students have the opportunity to learn how their behaviour impacts on their relationships with other students and this is reinforced as part of the day to day classroom program. Fairhills PS has a zero tolerance of bullying behaviours.

Chaplain

Fairhills has a Chaplain funded under the Federal government’s Chaplaincy program. Our Chaplain has a strong pastoral role and is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to support students, parents and staff. Other programs organised by the Chaplain include ‘Knitters Circle’ which enable Grandparents to be involved in teaching new skills to students and the ‘Great Watermelon Challenge’. Lunchtime activities are also organised to helps students develop their social relationships with each other.

Student Leadership

Each year all year 6 students are able to nominate for a variety of student leadership positions. This could be for school captain, house captain or to be part of a particular team eg the ICT or Art team. School Captains participate in a full day of special training for their role.

PALS (Peer Activity Leaders) program

All Year 6 students undertake special Leadership training and then deliver a games program at lunchtime for the younger students. This program assists the older students to develop their leadership capacity and the younger ones to improve their relationships with others.

Kids Hope mentoring

Fairhills PS offers the Kids Hope mentoring program. This program enables students who may have special needs to be matched up with an adult mentor, who then spends an hour a week, one on one with their student as a special friend.

Fruity Friday

This year Fairhills PS was successful in obtaining a Free Fruit Friday grant. Each Friday all students can access fresh fruit which is prepared by members of the PFA (Parents and Friends Association). On other days of the week, all students have a fruit break at around 10.00am which reinforces the school’s focus on healthy living.

Nut allergies

As some students at Fairhills have nut allergies, students are encouraged not to share food to ensure the well-being of all students.

Transition programs

A number of Transition programs operate to ensure a smooth continuation of learning with each step in students’ progression through the school.

Prep Transition

Each year a strong link is formed with neighbouring Kindergartens and child care centres and the Prep Transition program commences early in term 2 with a Teddy Bear Maths night. An information night for prospective parents is also held in term 2 and the formal transition sessions are conducted in term 4.

Yr 6-7 Transition

In Year 6, there is a strong focus on supporting students in their transition to secondary school. This includes a special transition day at secondary school as well as a special program that helps prepare students both socially and emotionally for what to expect at secondary school. In term 4, there are regular visits from the local secondary school.

Yr 2-3 Transition

In 2008, a new aspect of the transition program was added to support a smoother transition from Year 2 to Year 3. This was put in place to assist students moving to a different building and also to help them adjust from informal to more formal contexts in their learning.
